Of footpaths, Cattle, Berries and Scones...

As with many good walks we encountered many signposts on Sunday past…


We walked part of the Mariners way, a very ancient footpath that crosses Dartmoor…


Sometimes it was single file only…


We passed the very old (over a thousand years if memory serves me right) farmhouse at Westcoombe, where incidentally, my cousin lived many years ago. I have happy memories of staying here. Its a traditional Dartmoor longhouse where a passage splits the house in two with a door front and back. Animals were kept in one side and humans in the other. The footpath passes straight through this house! But the front door was closed and it looks like people now go around the building. I regret to say at this point, and apologies to the owners for me being quite so blunt… but I was sad to see it in such a mess. The rubbish everywhere was appalling.


Look at this spectacular bit of stone masonary at the end of the shippen. This is part of the original building from all those centuries ago when Monks would offer food and drink and more importantly shelter for travellers crossing the moor on the Mariners way…


We carried on up the steep hill to Kings Barrows, past the East Vitifer mine of which my Great Grandfather was foreman in the early 1900s. Seems strange to see the ruins now and to think that once it would have been a hive of industry and destruction…


We all took pictures of ever changing skies…


We passed the man made Dew Pond, dug by hand and lined with clay… how many decades ago I wonder?


Littlest stood in this gap and said she was crossing to visit the forbidden land of ‘Wall’ (of Stardust fame).


Some of the granite in these walls were huge, like gravestones almost…


Braving the blustery winds!


There are many herds of Highland cattle on the Moor now…


She was a beauty… She came and…


She went… Their babies lie on the warm tarmac of the roads, like huge caramel coloured hearth rugs…


Like all good Sundays it ended with a perfect tea of fruit cake (made with Mead) and scones and cream, buns, sandwiches and fondant fancies, and most importantly, cup after cup of hot Clipper tea!
